The Casio G-Shock model range’s claim to fame has always been about its rough-and-tumble capabilities, but with each launch, the brand pushes what its watches can do just that little bit further. This latest model — the GWG-1000 Mudmaster — is their toughest and most rugged to date, so much so that it received praise and approval from Joseph Garcia, captain of the U.S. Corrections Special Operations Group. Not to be taken lightly, we reached out to the captain to get his take on why this new Mudmaster is the right watch for one of the toughest jobs on the planet. Here’s what we found out.
Of the different rugged watch brands out there, what is it about Casio/G-Shock that leads you to choose them over the competition?
“Casio G-Shocks have a long history of performance, worn by military, law enforcement, first responders, and extreme outdoor enthusiasts for decades. They offer unsurpassed performance under the most challenging environments and yet remain affordable by comparison. These watches al have a professional look about them that doesn’t detract from our uniform. All the way around these timepieces are hard to beat.”
How long have you been using Casio/G-Shock in the field?
“I have used Casio G-Shocks since my time in the military. When I transitioned into law enforcement and the tactical realm of Special Operations Corrections, I didn’t have to give the watch I used a second thought.”
Do you have a collection of watches at home? What do you wear as a watch when you’re not working?
“I have a number of G-Shock watches that I have worn throughout the years, and all of them actually still work. Like many, my life is my work, and vice versa. I rarely take my watch off and I don’t take my work watch off to put a dinner watch on. From tactical operations to everyday wear, the watch I wear is the watch I wear.”
What makes the MUDMASTER the right watch for Special Ops?
“The Mudmaster watch, like other G-Shock models out there, offers a number of features to choose from to best fit the environment you work in. The solar charging feature gives me one less thing to worry about before given deployment. The powerful light, compass, altimeter, barometer and other features give me a lot of information in one place. The illuminating features of the watch give me an instant sight profile under the worst conditions. If I need to regain my bearings in a dark or disoriented place, I can do so at the touch of a button.”
In your field, what is your day-to-day like? What kinds of situations and environments are you walking into? What can this watch truly withstand?
“We operate in a dangerous, violent, and unpredictable environment. One moment we may be setting off an explosive breach to gain entry into a confined space, the next we may be lifting off in a helicopter to provide overwatch during a high-threat transport. From torches to water and dirt, walls of concrete to steel doors and bars, these watches are always getting banged around and taking a beating. The shock resistance of these watches is witnessed both on the firing range, and through the continuous impacts they are exposed to while using breaching tools.”
What is the worst abuse one of your watches has taken and still kept working? (Hit by stuff, fallen off of stuff, run over by stuff, etc.?)
“Sometimes I transition a watch from my arm to a tactical vest, pack, or piece of gear, and more than once a vest or pack has taken a ride off the top tier of a multilevel cell block, and the watch lived to tell about it. The sheer number of blasts/bangs my watch is exposed to, from flash grenades to weapons firing, breaching explosions to hammering effect of a battering ram. The vibration of the helicopter and the constant impact my watch encounters with walls and even other operators is hard to express … but let’s just say this watch takes a punch like no other watch I’ve seen.”
After hearing the kind of things Captain Garcia has been able to put his G-Shocks through, We are more impressed than ever by their overall capability. With the inclusion of a compass, a barometer, an altimeter, a thermometer, not to mention the alarm, stopwatch, timer and world-time functions that all G-Shock watches come with, these things are really ready to survive the apocalypse.
